To lead in accident prevention in the renewable energy field, you need a strong understanding of socio-technical science and the ability to apply this knowledge practically, bringing people together to work safely.

In this course, we highlight the performance imperative for organisations to operate safely. You will be introduced to the Culture and Risk Evaluation (CARE) model and learn how you can apply this model to make your organisation safer from top to bottom, operating like a high-performance organisation (HRO). This course takes you through the journey of a fictional contractor in their transformation to achieve HRO performance.

Learning Goals

When you have finished this course ...

  • Current Safety Limitations

You'll understand the flaws in how we currently handle safety and why we need to improve these methods for better results. 'You can’t solve problems by using the same thinking that created them.' - Albert Einstein.

  • Organisational Incident Causation

You'll learn how major accidents can start from the way organisations work, how people think about risk, and decision-making, with the goal to spot warning signs and stop accidents before they happen.

  • Operationalising Safety Culture

You'll learn how to build and keep a strong safety culture and what knowledge and actions are necessary to make it happen.

Safety Culture Specialist Course is for you if you can say yes to at least one of the following statements ...

  • Health and safety is part of my responsibilities

  • I aim to understand methods proven by science to cut down on serious accidents.

  • I want to learn how to create and keep up a highly reliable and successful work culture.

  • I have a leadership position in offshore operations, e.g., c-suite executive, EPC Director, Package Manager, project management, or frontline supervision.

  • I am a health and safety professional.

About the Safety Culture Specialist Course

The Safety Culture Specialist Course gives you, the learner, the tools to shape a culture that leads to enduring high performance. It provides a roadmap for senior leadership and leaders alike to foster and keep up a high-performance safety culture.

The methods described in the course operationalize safety culture in a way that has never been done before to achieve High Reliability Organization performance. This approach makes safety prevention a natural part of daily work just like the commercial airlines and nuclear industries (these two industries are deemed to be HRO)

HROs are described as those organizations that:

  • Create an operating environment that detects problems early and are always responded to in order to prevent serious incidents.
  • Work in high-risk environments with high efficiency.
  • Achieve extraordinary safety performance functioning without serious mishap over long periods of time.

The course brings everyone in the organization together with easy-to-follow safety strategies, a set of simple safety tactics and new performance measures that collectively result in a high-performance safety culture.

The course broadly covers:

  • Starting with WHY: The Need for Exemplary Safety Performance
  • Current Safety Limitations
  • Operationalising Safety Culture
  • New Measures for Success
  • Understanding Organizational Incident Causation
  • Using an Organizational Learning Framework
  • Achieving Organizational Mindfulness: a practical and realistic outlook that can and should be applied to all aspects of an organization's safety culture and management and applies to all organizational members.
  • Sensitivity to Operations: building resiliency and capacity to reduce risk to as low as reasonably practicable.
  • Leveraging Safety for Business Success.

What You Can Expect:

The course is broken down into two modules, consisting of 11 chapters.

Each module takes approximately 3-4 hours to complete.

The course follows the journey of a contractor, Great Wind Turbines, and their CEO Richard Wilkins through the contractor QHSE qualification process for the Atlantis Offshore Wind farm project off the southeastern coast of Vietnam and then being blindsided by two serious incidents.

The course takes the learner through their story of transformation to achieve HRO performance. This allows the learner a firsthand experience from the contractor’s perspective.

While this is fictionalized it is based on a real-life large-scale energy infrastructure project. The story arc:

  • Positions learners for success by:
    • Clearly articulates gaps with current safety performance,
    • Provides a direct line of sight to improvement, and
    • Informs decision-making and motivates improvement.
    • Achieve extraordinary safety performance functioning without serious mishap over long periods of time.
  • Provides practical information with creating a positively evolving safety culture to achieve HRO performance:
    • Focusing on what matters most,
    • Consistently executing well on HRO fundamentals, and
    • Provision of accountability with a new set of performance measures that meets the scientific criteria to ensure valid and reliable indicators that can be trusted to provide assurance.
  • Adheres to Vroom’s model for taking knowledge into action:
    • States what needs to be done,
    • Provides the tools, knowledge, and skills necessary to be successful, and
    • Delivers material business value.

Senior Instructor RECOA, Chief Science Officer, Intactix Systems Inc. Robert B. Stewart

Rob is an applied behavioural scientist in occupational psychology. Occupational psychology is the intersection between people and organisations to create high performance. His work spanning over the last two decades focuses on understanding why, despite all the resources, expertise, and effort, safety is not achieving the desired results in reducing serious workplace incidents. The work involves both understanding traditional safety and its failure points and creating new methodologies to operationalise culture and achieve High Reliability Organisation performance. This ensures everyone goes home safely, communities are protected, and the environment is safeguarded from serious incidents. Rob has worked with numerous high-risk industries, including renewable energy, oil and gas, construction, transportation, and manufacturing, collaborating with large multinationals and small and medium enterprises. His passion lies in performance improvement and operational excellence. Rob is results-driven and focused on outcomes, with a philosophy that "success must be distinguishable, understandable, and measurable in terms of practical observations."
