RECOA Offers Unexploded Ordnance – Explosive Remnants of War Specialist Course
1 September 2024 – The Renewable Construction Academy (RECOA) continues to provide essential courses and education programmes for the renewable energy industry and has recently launched "UXO – Explosive Remnants of War" specialist course. This course is designed for professionals working in the renewable energy sector, providing critical knowledge and techniques to manage the risks associated with unexploded ordnance (UXO) during subsea operations.
With over a century of conflicts leaving explosive munitions scattered across the seabed, offshore wind projects face significant hazards. RECOA’s UXO course addresses these challenges head-on, ensuring that industry personnel can effectively mitigate risks and maintain safety.
Chris Weaver, Senior Instructor at RECOA, emphasises the importance and relevance of the course,
"Managing UXO risks is no longer a straightforward task. With the growing number of offshore projects, understanding the intricacies of UXO clearance is essential. This course provides practical guidance on maintaining safety during offshore operations while addressing the environmental and operational risks posed by unexploded ordnance."
Why this course can benefit you:
Ensuring that construction activities do not encounter unexploded ordnance, such as a 500-kg bomb or a torpedo, is as crucial as avoiding damage to sensitive munitions. The discovery of UXO during construction can halt operations, result in substantial financial losses, and strain resources. Mastering the fundamentals of UXO management is essential for mitigating risks, preventing costly delays, and maintaining uninterrupted project progress.
What the course covers:
The "UXO – Explosive Remnants of War" course offers a thorough examination of UXO management, including the planning, installation, and maintenance of offshore renewables. It covers critical stages such as desktop studies, geophysical surveys, and inspections to identify and assess potential munitions. Emphasis is placed on reducing risks to "as low as reasonably practicable" during subsea operations, including the installation of turbine foundations, substation jackets, and power transmission cables.
This course provides condensed, expert knowledge in less than two days, derived from extensive offshore experience, to equip participants with the necessary skills to navigate the complexities of UXO management effectively.
